Finding My Place: Zayne’s Story of Growth, Advocacy, and Success at OFL

Zayne, standing confidently at the podium, addressed the graduating class of 2024 with a heartfelt and inspiring speech.

Zayne is a dynamic and passionate student whose journey at Opportunities For Learning (OFL) demonstrates the power of personalized education to transform lives. From struggling in a traditional school system to becoming a leader and advocate, Zayne’s story is one of perseverance, growth, and finding purpose.

The Challenge

Like many students seeking a new path, Zayne’s journey to OFL was born out of struggle and frustration. “I came from a… well, we can say sub-par background. And had an incredibly difficult time in school,” he admitted. Despite his “fiery passion for all things scholastic,” the traditional system left him feeling unsupported and misunderstood.

“The papers they gave me seemed never to sit still,” Zayne explained. “I’d fill them out in what I thought was A+ fashion but soon I’d lose them. I ended my ‘normal’ schooling tenure with over 27 zeros in math, just cause I wasn’t allowed to turn in my work the day of.”

His struggles weren’t limited to academics. Zayne also advocated tirelessly for his classmates, standing up to a system that “never listened” and “didn’t work for me, my peers, and my friends.” This relentless mismatch between his potential and the opportunities available led him to OFL—a place where he could finally thrive.

The OFL Impact

Zayne’s time at OFL marked a significant turning point. He described OFL as “the most meaningful experience of my very young and hopefully promising life.” At OFL, Zayne discovered a community that valued his individuality, supported his growth, and reignited his passion for learning.

“I have proved both my willingness to be a lifelong learner and passion for right and fair treatment for all,” he said.

Through the student council, Zayne found a platform to create meaningful change. “Student Council is my proudest achievement at OFL,” he shared. “We’ve put in initiatives to encourage less drug use and provide a safe space for those struggling through the hellish journey known as rehabilitation.”

His leadership extended to organizing trips and fostering camaraderie among his peers. “We’ve organized and had never given up on trips to Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, to Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, and other international trips to the main countries involved in WWII.”

A Newfound Passion and Goal

OFL not only provided Zayne with academic opportunities but also helped him discover a passion for teaching and mentoring. “I had used [student council] as a platform to advertise my tutoring for students so shamelessly,” Zayne joked. “It allowed me to further my opportunities and get a position tutoring students as an actual paying job.”

Supportive Teachers & Community

Throughout his time at OFL, Zayne found unwavering support from teachers and staff who were invested in his success. He especially credited his primary teacher, Ken Devor, as a key mentor.

“Ken’s encouraging and strict attitude has pushed me forward time and time again,” Zayne said. “I most definitely wouldn’t have taken any AP classes if it wasn’t for his challenges. Thank you, Ken, for being my teacher, my friend, and mentor.”

Zayne’s gratitude extended to all the teachers and staff at OFL. “I’ve built strong connections with every one of them and plan on visiting every time I have enough free time to come and bother you all and enthrall you with my somewhat eventful life.”

Reflection & Achievement

As Zayne reflected on his time at OFL, he celebrated his growth and the relationships he built along the way. “Thank you OFL, thank you to the teachers that got me here today, and thank you to all the friends I’ve made along the way.”

He encouraged his fellow graduates to embrace their passions and face the future with courage. “Let your passions guide you, your dreams fuel you, and your courage propel you towards a future filled with purpose and possibility.”

Through personalized education, a supportive community, and leadership opportunities, OFL helped Zayne overcome challenges, discover his passions, and prepare for a bright and meaningful future. As he said, “OFL has been the most meaningful experience of my very young and hopefully promising life.”
