High school is about more than coursework and credits. The friendships, experiences, and interests you explore outside the classroom shape who you become just as much as what happens inside one.
At Opportunities For Learning (OFL), a network of free public charter high schools in Southern California, extracurricular activities aren't an afterthought. They're a central part of the student experience, and they're available at no cost.
Whether you're interested in competitive sports, international travel, creative clubs, or career exploration, OFL gives students real opportunities to get involved, build confidence, and make memories that last well beyond graduation.
OFL offers organized sports teams that give students a chance to compete, stay active, and connect with peers. Available sports include softball, basketball, passing league football, soccer, volleyball, bowling, and e-sports.
These aren't just pickup games. OFL sports teams give students structure, camaraderie, and something to look forward to each week. For students who may have felt disconnected from school in the past, being part of a team can be a turning point.
Program availability varies by campus location, so it's worth checking with your nearest OFL center to see which sports are currently offered.
OFL encourages students to explore their interests through a variety of student-led groups. Current groups include student leadership, photography, poetry, equestrian, and cheerleading.
What makes OFL's approach stand out is that students aren't limited to what already exists. If there's a group you wish your school had, you can start your own. This kind of flexibility reflects OFL's broader philosophy — education built around you, not the other way around.
Online students aren't excluded from the in-person side of OFL. They're invited to join sports leagues (basketball, football, volleyball, soccer), dances, and trips alongside their on-site peers. Students enrolled in OFL's Online Program also have virtual clubs available to them, including ASB, Cooking, Gaming, Anime, Parenting, and Crafting. The community is there whether students show up in person or log in from home.
One of the most distinctive features of an OFL education is access to extraordinary travel and experiential learning programs, all completely free to students. OFL partners with Pathways Travels to offer once-in-a-lifetime adventures designed to build teamwork, leadership, and self-confidence through hands-on experiences.
Located on 240 acres in Northern California, Blackbird Farm immerses students in sustainable farming, healthy eating, and connection with nature. Students harvest fruit from orchards, learn bread- and cheese-making, attend farm-to-table classes, participate in high ropes team-building courses, and journal about their experiences. Students are nominated by their teachers and earn school credit for participating.
Set on 56 acres at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, this program lets students take over the daily operations of a traditional ranch. Activities include saddling and riding horses, tending to livestock, nature hikes, and team-building exercises. Students leave with community service hours, school credits, and memories they carry for life.
A five-day trip to the nation's capital, where students tour the Capitol building, the White House, the Smithsonian Museum, and the Lincoln Memorial while earning elective credits and reflecting on American history and their own leadership potential.
An eight-day cultural exchange where students attend classes in Cuban history, visit the homes of local families, tour organic farms and landmarks like the University of Havana and Ernest Hemingway's home, and participate in photography workshops and dance classes. Students are prepared through pre-trip coursework and encouraged to share their own stories of American life.
An eleven-day journey through Venice, Florence, and Rome that combines art classes, museum tours, pasta-making, and visits to the Vatican and Roman ruins with full cultural immersion in Italian cuisine and daily life.
A fourteen-day adventure spanning the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Dujiangyan Panda Keeper Program. Students explore Chinese calligraphy, visit the terracotta warriors, and engage in complete cultural immersion through local cuisines and urban exploration.
Students in both our in-person and online programs have access to a range of enriching travel opportunities, including college and university tours across New York City, visits to World War II historical sites in Europe, and international trips to Scandinavia and Japan. Participating students are typically nominated by their teachers and complete an essay and interview before final selection, making these programs both a reward and a growth experience.
Beyond clubs and trips, OFL hosts school-wide events that bring the community together. Students can look forward to talent shows, prom, and live graduation ceremonies held each winter and spring, complete with student speakers.
These moments matter. For students who may have missed traditional milestones at other schools, OFL makes sure those experiences are celebrated.
OFL's extracurricular offerings extend into professional development and post-secondary planning. Students can enroll in Career Technical Education (CTE) courses across high-demand fields like healthcare, IT, construction, veterinary science, and cosmetology, though availability varies, and students should check with their local campus to see what's offered.
On the college prep side, on-site Student Advisors help with college applications, scholarship searches, and course selection, and students have access to free college campus tours, readiness programs, job fairs, and career-focused events.
OFL also connects students with community service opportunities that build real-world skills and a sense of purpose. Many of the experiential learning programs, like the Rocky Mountain Pathways Ranch, include community service hours as part of the experience, giving students a chance to contribute while they learn.
Students come to OFL from all kinds of backgrounds. Some are catching up on credits. Some are working jobs or caring for family. Some simply need a school that fits their life instead of demanding they fit into a rigid mold.
Extracurricular activities at OFL serve a deeper purpose than filling time between classes. They help students build relationships in a supportive environment, discover interests and strengths they didn't know they had, develop leadership and collaboration skills, create positive associations with school and learning, and build a transcript that reflects more than just grades.
At OFL, the goal has always been to empower students to identify and pursue their dreams in high school and beyond. Extracurriculars are one of the most powerful ways that happens.
