What Are A-G Requirements for UC and CSU Eligibility?

If you’re planning to apply to a University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) campus, you’ve probably heard the term “A-G requirements.”

But what exactly does that mean?

A-G refers to the specific high school courses students must complete to be eligible for admission to UC and CSU schools. These requirements ensure students are academically prepared for college-level work.

At Opportunities For Learning (OFL), students who want to pursue four-year universities can work with counselors and teachers to understand these requirements and build a plan that aligns with their goals.

What Does A-G Stand For?

The “A-G” subject pattern includes 15 year-long college-preparatory courses completed in grades 9–12:

A. History / Social Science: 2 years
B. English: 4 years
C. Mathematics: 3 years required (4 recommended)
D. Laboratory Science: 2 years required (3 recommended)
E. Language Other Than English: 2 years required (3 recommended)
F. Visual and Performing Arts: 1 year
G. College-Preparatory Elective: 1 year

These courses must be completed with grades of C or better to count toward eligibility.

GPA Requirements for UC and CSU

In addition to completing A-G courses, students must also meet minimum GPA standards:

  • UC schools: Minimum 3.0 GPA for California residents (in A-G courses)
  • CSU schools: Minimum 2.5 GPA for California residents (in A-G courses)

Keep in mind that competitive campuses may require higher GPAs depending on the applicant pool.

When Should Students Start Planning?

Ideally, students begin planning for A-G completion in 9th grade. Waiting until senior year can limit options if required courses are missing.

At OFL, students meet with counselors and teachers to:

  • Review graduation requirements
  • Identify A-G approved courses
  • Track GPA progress
  • Adjust academic plans if goals change

Because OFL offers a flexible, personalized approach to education, students can create an academic plan that supports both high school graduation and university eligibility.

Are A-G Requirements the Same as High School Graduation Requirements?

Not always.

California high school graduation requirements and A-G eligibility requirements are related but not identical. A student may graduate from high school without completing all A-G courses.

Students who plan to apply to UC or CSU schools should confirm they are enrolled in A-G approved coursework, not just courses that satisfy minimum diploma requirements.

What If You’re Behind on Credits?

Students sometimes worry that falling behind on credits makes university eligibility impossible.

At OFL, academic planning is individualized. Counselors can help students:

  • Understand what A-G courses are still needed
  • Explore credit recovery options where appropriate
  • Build a realistic graduation and college timeline

OFL’s mission is to create educational choice for all students. That includes students who want a flexible learning environment while still preparing for college.

A Clear Plan Makes the Difference

A-G requirements are simply a roadmap. When students understand the subject pattern, GPA expectations, and timelines, they can make informed decisions about their future.
