How Does One-on-One Teacher Support Work at OFL?
Learning isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it doesn’t always happen in a classroom full of students. Opportunities for Learning’s (OFL) guided independent study model allows you to earn up to 15 credits in just six weeks by tailoring your education to your needs and your schedule. Here’s what guided independent study looks like in practice, and how it can help you recover the credits you need.
The Guided Independent Study Model Explained
Our hybrid learning is based on the reality that some students grasp concepts quickly and can accelerate through lessons, while others need more time to master specific skills. Many OFL students also have jobs, family obligations, or other circumstances that make traditional school schedules difficult to maintain.
OFL’s guided independent study model empowers students to learn independently but with consistent, one-on-one support from credentialed teachers who serve as their educational guides and mentors. Rather than attending classes at set times, students schedule regular individual appointments with their teachers. These meetings take place twice per week initially, then the frequency is adjusted based on your needs and progress. These working sessions offer students one-on-one teacher support that includes direct instruction, answering questions, and reviewing assignments, all with the goal of ensuring that you understand the material before moving forward.
Individual Meetings That Make the Difference
During one-on-one sessions, your teacher's full attention is focused on you, your specific questions, and your individual learning needs. There's no pressure to speed up or slow down for classmates who may be at different academic levels.
These meetings allow teachers to identify exactly where you’re struggling and address those specific gaps immediately. If you're confused about a math concept, your teacher can explain it multiple ways until it clicks. If you're behind in a subject, your teacher will develop a plan to help you catch up. If you're excelling and want to move faster, your teacher will help you accelerate through lessons.
This individual attention also creates a safe, non-judgmental space for you to ask questions you might never have raised in a traditional classroom.
Customizing Your Learning Pace
One of the most powerful aspects of OFL's model is the ability to vary your learning pace in different subjects. You might move quickly through English because it's your strength, while spending more time on math concepts that require extra practice. This flexibility means you're never held back in subjects where you excel, nor are you rushed through material you haven't mastered.
In OFL’s blended learning model, students earn credits by completing course materials and demonstrating mastery through a combination of independent study modules, online coursework, and teacher-led instruction. Because credits are awarded as work is completed—rather than tied to a traditional semester schedule—you can make meaningful progress quickly when you’re ready, or slow down when life requires it.
If you’re looking to graduate early, you can accelerate your coursework with teacher support and guidance. If you’re balancing the demands of a job, you can progress more gradually without falling behind. OFL’s model takes into account that family emergencies, health issues, work schedule changes happen, and we accommodate these realities rather than penalizing students for them.
The school operates year-round with rolling enrollment, so you can start anytime and work through courses continuously rather than waiting for semesters to begin or end. This means you can maintain momentum even during summer months or after life circumstances have interrupted your education.
Personalized Instruction Tailored to Your Needs
Every OFL student receives a personalized learning plan developed in collaboration with their teacher. This plan takes into account your academic history, current skill levels, graduation requirements, and goals after graduation. Based on your unique learning style and needs, your teacher then tailors instruction to help you meet these objectives.
If you're a visual learner, your teacher incorporates diagrams and demonstrations. If you learn best by doing, instruction emphasizes hands-on application. If you need additional resources or alternative explanations, your teacher provides them. This personalized approach extends to assignment selection, pacing recommendations, and the level of academic support teachers offer.
For students with learning differences or who require accommodations, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans can be implemented naturally within the existing structure, with teachers adapting instruction and support to meet your needs.
Building Relationships That Support Success
Another benefit of OFL's one-on-one teacher support is the relationship that develops between students and teachers. As you learn subject matter, your teacher learns your strengths, your challenges, your goals, and your story. This consistent, caring adult relationship is often what students identify as the key factor in their success at OFL.
Teachers at OFL are advocates and cheerleaders who genuinely care about your success. They celebrate your progress and encourage you during setbacks, making the flexible blended learning model at OFL a collaborative process customized for you.
